Horse Safety for Kids and Beginners

For those of us who had the opportunity to grow up around horses, responsibilities and safe horse-handling practices became lifelong habits. But there are a lot of families with children who are starting from scratch, buying their first horse, and have no idea how to go about handling one. Here are some basic guidelines that kids and beginners should know about horses: Continue reading

Spring at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch

SPRING SEASON Spring is one of our favorite times on the ranch (next to fall). It is ever changing and most of all full of great families – new and old.  There is plenty of time to come and enjoy this wonderful and interesting time of the year with us.  It’s not over yet. Continue reading

Symbols of Springtime

Spring is right up there on my list of favorite things. There’s nothing more refreshing than new flowers, baby calves, twittering robins, and the earthy smell of overturned dirt. It always gives me a sense of excitement and anticipation of the even better season of summer that’s coming. Spring brings so many reminders of the good things in life. Continue reading

Short On Time

“I’m so busy I don’t know whether I found a rope or lost my horse.” A co-worker read this quote aloud to me yesterday from a t-shirt catalog she was thumbing through. As I laughed aloud, I thought, “That pretty much sums up how I feel.” Spring hasn’t really even gotten into full swing, and I am feeling left behind and swamped by undone projects. Continue reading

Wide Open Spaces

I have a friend here visiting from Australia for a couple of months, and we went horseback riding yesterday. It’s finally starting to warm up here in the midwest, and with warm breezes beckoning, we put on our riding boots and headed out to the farm. Continue reading

Songs From Grandma

My grandma was an avid horse lover. Maybe not as horse crazy as I am, because she had too much work to do to spend any time on horses. But I think that horses were always on her mind. I don’t know what kind of fool I’d be if it weren’t for my Grandma, but I sincerely doubt that I’d be the horse crazy fool that I am. Continue reading

Friendship With Horses

It’s been awhile since I’ve had the chance to just spend the day following my horse around. But today I was thinking back to when I was a kid, when I would be at the barn all day, not necessarily riding, but just spending time with the horses. There’s a lot to be said for getting solid hours of horse time. Continue reading

Scars

Every body’s got a tale to tell, and if you’ve been as enthusiastic about outdoor activities as I have, chances are you have some scars as reminders of your experiences. I noticed a scar of mine the other day, which made me start thinking about how I got that scar, which made me wonder just how many scars do I have that are horse-related? I have to say, almost all of my scars have a horse story behind them. Continue reading

Howdy from Horseshoe Canyon!!

I hope you and your families all wintered well.  The weather is turning warmer and the horses are feeling good and starting to walk on fresh iron.  I think I even saw a hint of green when the snow melted…We have stayed busy this past fall and winter and have added a few new [...] Continue reading
